Current Research
Professor Keith Smith has worked extensively on issues related to the economics of innovation.
His work has concentrated on the nature and dynamics of innovation processes, on innovation systems theories, on innovation in low-technology industries, innovation and growth in resource-based economies, and the development and analysis of innovation indicators. Prof Smith also works on the foundations of public policies supporting innovation.
Prof Smith has consulted extensively for companies and policy agencies, including transnational agencies such as the OECD and the European Commission.

Professor at the Institute for New Technologies, United Nations University, in the Netherlands, 2001-2003.
Professor of Economics of Technology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, 1995-2001
Director of the Group for Studies in Technology, Innovation and Economic Policy (STEP) in Oslo (1991-2000)
He has been a Visiting Professor at Chalmers University, Gothenberg, Sweden; the ANU, Canberra, and the University of Western Sydney.

Innovation and the Knowledge Economy in Australia (Research)
May 2006In 2004 Professor Keith Smith researched and reported on how the knowledge economy was creating value in Australian industry, and how companies were innovating to gain a competitive advantage. His paper The Knowledge Economy in the Australian Context then paved the way for his follow up report in 2005 Promoting Innovation in Australia: Business and Policy Issues in which he looked at the opportunities and challenges facing businesses and governments in fostering innovation to generate business value.
