A DECADE OF DISCOVERY - LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

25 Sep 2007

The Australian Business Foundation has launched official celebrations to mark a decade of discovery since its inception in 1997 as an independent organisation created to undertake evidence based research on topics key to the prosperity of Australia and the global competitiveness of Australian businesses.

Navigating the events of the last decade was challenging to say the least, so what will the next decade be like?

Commenting on the anniversary, Ms Narelle Kennedy, Chief Executive of the Foundation, said:"We have certainly covered some unchartered seas in that time, but as Andre Gidé famously said - One does not discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore."

"We have navigated everything from the internet revolution, the resources boom, free trade agreements, SARS and the war on terror, anti-globalisation protests, climate change and the list goes on.  And we are looking at the rise of China, India, web 2.0, increasing demand for hybrid cars, the impact of GM foods - so I fully expect not only that the next decade will hold these and many even more intriguing issues, and that Australian businesses will continue to rise to the occasion."

To mark the occasion, the Australian Business Foundation will hold a gala dinner at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour on 14 November 2007.  The keynote speaker will be Professor Michael Enright from the University of Hong Kong, talking about the big impact issues that could go either way as the 21st century reaches its second decade, including transforming competitiveness, cities as innovation hubs, China and new angles on globalisation.
